The knowledge lives in code scattered across repositories, in Zapier accounts owned by people who left the company, and in cron jobs running on servers that nobody remembers provisioning.

Why Middleware Didn’t Solve It

iPaaS platforms (MuleSoft, Boomi, Workato) and ESBs (enterprise service buses) were supposed to fix integration spaghetti. They centralize the integration logic in one platform. Instead of 90 point-to-point connections, you have 10 connections to a central hub. That’s a real improvement in architecture.

But these platforms still require explicit, manual configuration for every integration. You still map Field A in Salesforce to Field B in NetSuite by hand. You still write transformation logic for every data type mismatch. You still define error handling for every failure scenario. The agent understands that these fields represent the same business concepts even though the field names, data types, and structures differ.

When an API schema changes, the agent re-runs the inference step against the updated schema. If Salesforce renames BillingStreet to BillingAddress.Street in a future API version, the agent detects the change and updates the mapping. No human intervention required for straightforward schema evolution.

For ambiguous changes, the agent flags the mapping for review rather than guessing. This is a critical design choice: adaptive doesn’t mean autonomous. The system handles routine changes automatically and escalates edge cases to a human.

Error Handling That Understands Context

Traditional integration error handling follows a simple pattern: try the request, retry on failure (usually 3 times with exponential backoff), then fail and alert. This works for transient errors like network timeouts. It’s useless for semantic errors.

Consider this scenario: your integration creates a customer record in NetSuite, but the API returns a “DUPLICATE_RECORD” error. A traditional integration retries three times, fails three times, and sends an alert. If an API returns a validation error because a field value exceeds the maximum length, the agent can truncate intelligently rather than failing the entire transaction. The error handling is derived from the policy’s business intent, not from generic retry logic.

Rate Limiting and Backpressure

APIs have rate limits. Salesforce allows 100,000 API calls per 24-hour period for Enterprise edition. NetSuite has concurrent user limits. HubSpot throttles to 100 requests per 10 seconds. Every API has different limits, different enforcement mechanisms, and different consequences for exceeding them.

Traditional integrations handle rate limits reactively. They send requests until they get a 429 (Too Many Requests) response, then back off. This is wasteful: you’ve already consumed a request just to learn you’re over the limit, and the backoff period is usually longer than necessary.

The compiled execution plan accounts for rate limits proactively. During compilation, the agent reads the API documentation and known rate limit parameters, then builds throttling into the execution plan. For a bulk sync of 50,000 Salesforce records to NetSuite, the plan batches requests optimally: large enough batches to minimize overhead, small enough to stay within rate limits, with appropriate pauses between batches.

Backpressure handling is equally important. If a downstream API goes down entirely, the agent queues pending operations and resumes automatically when the API recovers. The queue is persistent, so nothing is lost during an outage. And because the execution plan is deterministic, the agent can pick up exactly where it left off without re-processing completed operations.

Testing Integrations with Policy Replay

Testing traditional integrations is painful. You need sandbox environments for every connected system, test data that mirrors production, and manual verification that the right data ended up in the right place. Most teams skip comprehensive testing because the setup cost is too high.

Policy-driven integrations are testable by design. Because the policy is a declarative specification, you can replay it against test data and verify the output without connecting to live APIs. The compilation step produces an execution plan that can run in a dry-run mode: it shows you exactly which API calls it would make, with what payloads, in what order, without actually making them.

This enables three testing patterns that are difficult with traditional integrations. First, regression testing: when you update a policy, replay it against your test dataset and compare the execution plan to the previous version. Any changes in behavior are visible immediately. Second, schema migration testing: when a vendor announces an API change, you can test the updated schema against your policies before the change goes live. Third, failure scenario testing: inject specific error responses (duplicate record, rate limit exceeded, field validation failure) and verify the agent handles each one according to the policy.
